Many Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic riders, including this writer, complain about the top of the stock windshield being right in the rider’s line of sight. There are many alternatives, shorter and taller, available from HD as well as several after-market manufacturers. The choice for this review was a unique design that incorporates a ‘recurve’ to the top of the windshield to direct wind, bugs and rain further up and over the rider’s head. The claim is to provide a ‘rider pocket’ behind the windshield that is as good as that provided by the stock windshield even though the height is only 9.5”; 2.5” shorter than stock.
The shield is manufactured by Clearview Shields of Bailey, CO. Clearview makes shields for most makes of motorcycles. Email sales@clearviewshields.com with the year, make and model of your scoot and they will respond with an e-brochure of fitments available for your bike. Customer service is responsive and helpful answering questions and explaining the differences between their choices, as well as makers. Their choices include shields that are available in many heights and widths; clear, smoke tinted or opaque black (for the short, sport shields); some available with optional vents - for a custom fit and finish tailored to you – the rider.
The quality of the materials is evident upon opening the package. The shield is well packaged to prevent damage, including a film coating on both sides that is to be removed during the installation process. After removing the film it is ‘clear’ that any optical effect is negligible, even with the smoke tint included on the test shield. The shields are D.O.T. approved.
Installation is simple. Remove the three torx-head screws on the front of the batwing fairing, remove the stock shield and put on the new shield (be sure to follow torque specs to not damage the shield or fairing). It is immediately noticeable the line of sight issue was solved. Now for a ride to check out the wind effect…
Riding at varying speeds, this writer noted that the ‘rider pocket’ does in fact seem to be at least as good as the stock 12” shield. The easiest description of the ‘recurve’ is to say the shield slopes up toward the rider as the stock does, but then a few inches below the top, it curves away from the rider, toward the front of the bike. The recurve does seem to force the air flow (and bug flow) forward and up, clearing the rider’s head just as advertised. It does allow a little more rain to get to the rider, but not a significant amount. Added bonuses to this writer are it now allows wearing of a baseball cap – bill forward (which was not easily done with the stock shield) and the airflow is directed further around the sides, keeping more wind off the hands. The only improvement to suggest would be if manufacturer polished the edges of the shield for an even higher quality look.
Clearview Shields can be recommended as a good buy and should be checked out if you’re thinking of replacing your windshield for any reason. Be sure to tell them ‘bogie’ sent you.

I can see over the shield perfectly but do not get blasted my the oncomming wind. Road in the rain last week without any problems. Much better that those eBay shorties.

Click for Larger Image.  Bought my 2006 Harley Davidson Street Glide with a cool looking 4" factory windshield that left my ears ringing for days. I went to an aftermarket 8" smoked windshield that was much better. Then I bought the 8" Clearview with the Recurve. What a difference. The quality is incredible...not a flat piece of plexi like the others, but a preformed, thick windshield that stands up to the wind (had it up to 90 MPH the other day), and has fantastic clarity. The Recurve feature is what really makes it. You'd have thought I'd gone to a 12" windshield...what a difference!

Click for Larger Image.  The stock 6 1/2 inch windshield that was on my bike caused the wind to hit me right in the glasses. Obviously, this isn't a good thing. By swapping it out with the Clearview Eurolip 6 1/2 windshield, the wind now goes over my head without having to install a taller windshield. It gives me the look that I want and the functionality that I need.

We both love the sheilds, for the first time she is able to see over a windsheild comfortably, and the 9.5 on my Glide is perfect at 6'2" to see over, both without being buffetted by wind, the curve gives a great little lift to the wind and makes the ride pleasurable - less wind noise to - great for tunes on the Glide! The tint is perfect on mine, looks good but able to see thru fine.

I just received my order for a Clearview windshield for my 1999 H-D Ultra Classic. I must say that when I opened the box and saw the quality of packing, I was very much impressed! First Class!!!
But I was even MORE impressed when I put the windshield on the bike and ripped off the protective plastic covering. The windshield was cut to perfection and absolutely (as your name implies) CLEAR.
That's the best looking windshield that I've seen, bar none. Did I mention - I am totally pleased with the product and with the sales assistance given me. I will certainly be recommending you to others for their needs. Please feel free to refer prospective customers to me for reference.
